This certification assures the commitment of Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya to reduce the impact of its activities on the planet and local communities.
Secrets Akumal is a proud participant in the Akumal Bay Management Plan, which was designed by the federal authorities to encourage safe and responsible snorkeling practices amongst sea turtles. As part of the plan, the government has established several guidelines relating to specific times that snorkeling is allowed and the use of appropriate equipment. Our resort takes extra precaution to ensure sea turtles well-being.
Since the beginning of 2017, Secrets Akumal has adopted a “No Straw” policy on our beach and at our pool bars in an effort to protect marine life from plastic waste.
During nesting season, which goes on from May to November, the hotel takes extra precautions to remove obstacles on the beach and to reduce light and noise pollution in order to provide an undisturbed nesting area for the turtles.
As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, the resort has hired an Environmental Manager who provides training to new employees, creates smart policies and works in coordination with the environmental federal agencies of Mexico. The entire hotel and all of its departments have strict policies on recycling and other eco-friendly practices.
